Overall, I am strongly in favor of having a policy for the use of generative AI within our Society which restricts our usage of it to ethical uses and can be quickly adapted in handbooks as things change. I like the choices in this particular policy draft overall. I would recommend the following changes to this draft:

A.1: I do not understand after reading this policy if AI generated art is permissible on social media / for advertising if it is clearly labeled as such and not presented as original. I feel strongly that it should not be used in this context and that this decision should be explicitly written in this top level policy and not delegated to the social media handbook, since the top level policy requires a commentary period to change, unlike the social media handbook, and I feel that this commentary period provides necessary friction for such an impactful change.

A.2.E: “Translate text between languages” - I believe that AI-translated text should not be considered an accurate translation until it has been reviewed/rewritten by a human who understands both the source and destination languages.

This is relevant to us in Canada where French is an official language and where both official languages are required to be used in some contexts. On a personal note, as an English speaker who recently moved to Canada, I have spent a large part of the last year learning French, and based on that personal experience I don’t trust machine translation to accurately capture nuance all of the time. At the same time, I know translation is a skill that not everyone has, and accessibility of information in a timely manner is also important. So, my proposal is that all AI generated translation is clearly marked as such (which is already in this policy) and that AI generated translations are rewritten by humans before being labeled as official messages (e.g. messages from leadership).

A.2: One use which I personally think should be explicitly called out is the use of AI in automated notetakers. For context, I am currently employed in mundane life as a software developer by a startup which provides AI tools for financial advisors, and a large part of our product is AI transcription of online meetings and AI summarization of that transcript. I think there should be a specific policy here as anyone can send a notetaker to online meetings like local business meetings or the quarterly board meeting if they have the link, and it seems fair to have a widely known logic behind admittance/denial to act based on, rather than as a snap decision for each meeting. I would lean towards banning AI notetakers in our policy - my company’s product explicitly sets limitations on whether our data is used for retraining of models, and explicitly requires consent of all attendees (tracked by the notetaker owner), but I do not believe that all AI notetakers opt out of retraining, nor that all attendees in an SCA context have provided/will provide their consent, nor that notetaker owners will track that consent. Also, again on a personal note, I find that when I rely on my AI notetaker at work I think less deeply about meetings as I know the notetaker will catch what I missed - but this means that I am more likely to miss important information, and don’t always review the notetaker output to realize I have missed something.

So this is a post to brag that I have now reached one year straight of not missing a single local rapier practice in Ealdormere.

Number goes up, but statistics can lie, what does it mean?

Practically speaking it means that I didn’t get on an airplane or really go on any sort of more than four day trip in 2025.

It means that I have been lucky to watch Sylvia visit our practice first as a not yet walking baby and now as a toddler (I did have to shout to call a hold last week as she started to run towards the active rapier field, but nobody was hurt, and it’s not that frequent). It means that I got to attend the wonderful pageantry of the engagement party of someone whose father, while not usually active in the SCA, called upon all the champions from tournaments held in honor of his daughter’s birth to support and witness her in choosing a partner.

It means that I got to celebrate my birthday last fall by following the local tradition of fighting bouts corresponding to each year of my life - a feat that I struggled with in 2025 and will likely struggle with again this year as I grow one year older. (I was told it’s a local tradition but I have not seen anyone else opting into that tradition, and you’d think at least one other person would have been born in the last 52 weeks… but that’s ok, I had fun!)

It means that I got my current job through a group sent to me from our local rapier marshal. It means that, when I was in a (extremely minor, everything’s fine) car accident, the first person I called when I got home and needed local knowledge to figure out what to do (a few days before I called my parents) was our local seneschal.

It means that I am every week, even when a week is hard, actively choosing to follow the commitments I have made to myself and to my SCA family (even though my maestra is far away now, and even though mostly the commitment she tries to hold me to is to take care of myself and not burn out).

I am so grateful to have this community enriching my life. I do plan to go on a vacation this year though, so maybe someone else can pick up the streak this summer!

“Here is the total number of Masters of Defense elevated, compared to the number of women and other under represented genders elevated as of February 2026 by Kingdom and percentage.” (note, I believe a few minor corrections are coming to this chart soon, based on the attention it has recently received uncovering some data fixes)

One major thing I take away from this chart is how few Masters of Defense there are in the SCA! Ealdormere, my current kingdom of residence, does well by this measure not only because we’re doing the right things (if/when we are), but because the n of 10 is tiny and each elevation skews our row in the chart by a lot!

Some of the data that’s missing

• How many rapier fighters are there total in the SCA, how long have they been playing, and when did they reach milestones; cross referenced by demographic data such as gender, age, and location
• Qualitative information about the experience of rapier fighters, and how this changes in aggregate based on gender
• How do changes in local kingdom MoD management systems impact who is recommended and who is elevated? (eg. the East has a mailing list discussion, the Outlands meets only in person for peerage circles, I learned on Facebook that Atlantia has a watch list of potential fighters to consider, apparently)

Systemic problems, systemic solutions?

I read an unrelated-to-this-topic blog post in my mundane life earlier this week: https://treyhunner.com/2026/02/on-the-enviromental-impact-of-llms-for-coding/. You can ask me my thoughts on LLM usage in some other time and place than the SCA, but, this at the conclusion of the post stuck with me:

Americans have a habit of thinking about systemic problems through the lens of individual action. As I noted in my lightning talk at PyCon last year, system-level problems require system-level solutions.

I believe that the problem of supporting rapier fighters who are not well served by our current system is a systemic problem. The SCA is mostly decentralized, and nobody “owns” solving this problem at a society-wide level, which limits what we know and whether we spend our time and energy effectively. Data collection is done piecemeal and by hand, and the society level stewards of our game clearly care about inclusion but don’t determine what happens to fighters at a local level. The SCA’s decentralization makes us stronger in many ways and allows us to operate autonomously at times when it can be quite beneficial, but it also has drawbacks, and unfortunate moments when it intersects poorly with the parts that do need to be centralized (I have been thinking lately about something that happened in Østgardr when I lived there in 2017-2021, but I don’t need to rehash it in public right now, ask me in private.)

Data collection by a centralized authority, although I cast it as a positive in the previous paragraph, is also a double edged sword (pun intended, you are currently reading a blog post about swordfighting). Accurate data can be a powerful tool to direct effective change, and, gender data collection must be trans inclusive in order to be accurate, and, here in 2026 in the current world we live in I am extremely skeptical that providing my trans status in a structured format to a centralized authority will not come back to bite me in the future. Are there privacy-preserving ways of doing data collection? Sure, and personal data should be treated with caution and respect, and the fact remains that I simply do not trust the SCA to be a respectful steward of all of my personal data right now. (I am still aware of https://creativeadministration.org/sca-lists-archive-breach/, yes, it has been several years, no, I do not think it will be meaningfully harder for a volunteer to make an equally impactful mistake today.)

So, what to do? I am not sure but in the absence of additional data, in this moment, I am anchored by my personal experiences. They are not inherently generalizable, and I believe that my experiences as a nonbinary person are substantially different in some places than the average woman-in-rapier experience (see more discussion of my viewpoint in the second half of this post: https://anne.loves.technology/anachronism/rapier/2023/08/08/pennsic.html) I want everyone to be supported, but, I only know what support feels like from my own perspective.

Miscellaneous thoughts on what it looks like for me when I feel supported

• Advanced fighters are attending my local practice, and spearheading/distributing the effort of teaching newcomers, so I as an intermediate-at-best fencer can focus on improving my own skill and not just on making sure that absolute newcomers have a good experience
• Advanced fighters are fighting me in particular when I am on the field at a practice, and helping me understand where and how to improve (I had an especially good week of this last week, I very much appreciated the attention I received)
• People pay attention to how I do in tournaments / when I do well in tournaments, people tell me they noticed me doing well / people offer advice on where to improve based on what they saw
• When I put in extra volunteer effort to improve our game (e.g. marshalling), that effort is noticed and I am thanked
• When I ask for help, I receive it (e.g. when I was baronial marshal and was traveling during a weekly practice, someone else was usually able to host practice that week)
• When I am struggling, I am given a graceful path to recovery (e.g. when I am upset about something in particular, an informal conversation with a friend or a mentor to help me understand what I can do about the upsetting thing / why it happened)
• My informal SCA community (my household, being a provost to my Maestra, etc) advocates for me in the contexts where they do have formal access (circles, officer positions, etc)

Most of these support actions are not gendered in any way; almost anyone can support anyone else with them (though more-experienced people can do more to enact some forms of support)

Quick conclusion

Do I think more can be done to support underrepresented genders in martial arts and in SCA rapier in particular? Yes, and I would like to continue discussing exactly what to do and how to do it. Should the SCA be more central in this or less? Where are we doing well and where are we doing poorly? I would love to see more constructive engagement with the topic, and less shouting on Facebook about who is responsible for this burden - since, after all, many hands make light work.

Note I have no indigenous heritage; I simply want to support and respect marginalized groups that may be different from the marginalized groups I am a part of, and learn what I can about history! I am just beginning to learn how my US-based education on indigenous history is substantially different than that of the part of now-Canada that we currently reside in, and I am sure there is much more for me to learn.

What was read in court

There was also a gift, and words for the Tribal Representative who was present:

What I liked about it

I liked that the acknowledgement was front and center in a late morning court, the time when most of the people at the event are most likely to be present and paying attention. In the past I’ve been told that it would break immersion in our event and be disrespectful of the extremely negative reality of what has been done to indigenous people to acknowledge these mundane concerns within an in-game LARP-ish royal court. I didn’t necessarily agree with that opinion then but I was willing to accept it when I was newer to the SCA and was invested in moving forward with something rather than continuing with no acknowledgement whatsoever. I am glad to now have proof that it is possible to do an acknowledgement in a court, breaking the fourth wall, without the sky falling.

What could be improved about it next time

I spoke with someone who is significantly more connected to the local SCA community than I am shortly after the event. I will leave them anonymous for now but may edit if I obtain their permission later to be credited. I’m grateful for the conversation we had! My paraphrase/summary (now, months later) of what we discussed in October was that this person felt that it could have been more respectful if the person doing the acknowledgement in court had leaned less on the indigenous members of the local SCA community to write the draft of the statement (the acknowledgement should come from the heart of the non-indigenous acknowledger), if they had practiced the statement more, and if they had been more actively present in the moment when it was occurring (eye contact, etc). It overall read to me in the moment as the crown being nervous / looking at notes / etc to ensure they got something really important right – but it certainly isn’t my place to decide if that is a sufficient or acceptable reason, or if it read to others in the moment as less engaged than it could have.

I also think that the tribal representatives were probably at least a little bored by sitting through most of the morning court. I wonder if there is a way to be better respectful of their time, or if they had someone liaising who was explaining to them why this mattered to us and what was occurring, to make it more interesting.

A policy proposal (to make incoming royals sign a confidentiality form when they win Crown Tournament) was incomplete in a way that caused some alarm. My full thoughts on this should be obvious from the email chain. I have pasted my emails below and paraphrased the responses to them, as I have not requested permission to reproduce the emails I received & there’s nothing much in them that would warrant exact reproduction anyway.

Some meta-commentary on giving commentary, if you will

I feel that when I email the Board they have lately been more friendly and receptive to my feedback. I attribute this to several things.

First, my consistency in giving feedback and contributing to my local SCA over the years has perhaps made the people who respond to emails aware that I’m trying to improve things in my own way, and not just trying to cause problems.

Second, I think I am helped by the effort I have made lately to not just be angry about things via email but also have some empathy for the volunteers trying to make it through difficult circumstances. This approach change was more apparent especially after mid-late 2024 (around when I was elected to the Board of Directors of my local hackerspace, a much smaller 501c3 with its own tangle of interpersonal conflicts).

Third, I also attribute it to some light coaching from the people I met in the SCA in Colorado (the Kingdom of the Outlands is 1/3 the size of the East Kingdom, so the social dynamics are different and I personally found them more amenable to what I was trying to learn), and also some emotional stability work that I did on my own via therapy and probably just generally rough edges being sanded over time as I’m no longer as socially inexpert as I was in my 20s.

1. Intent of this proposal
   • I agree with the intent of holding official representatives of the SCA who have access to privileged information to a standard for confidentiality. Officers should all affirm their intent to follow all SCA policies when they apply, and I am comfortable with kingdom-level and up officers signing a form stating that they understand what they’re agreeing to when they step up.
   • I agree with the intent of a Crown Tournament entrant affirming that they are required to follow all applicable SCA rules when they enter the list and again when they step up.
   • I disagree that the victors of a Crown Tournament should be allowed access to privileged information due to their role as Crown or Heirs. I believe that in my ideal world holding an in-game role does not mean that out-of-game decisions such as anti-harassment policy enforcements become a part of their purview. I believe the change as written in the current draft brings us farther from this ideal state, not closer to it.
2. Implementation of proposals, generally
   • I would like it if all active SCA policies had a clear ownership (ideally a position with continuity, not a person who may leave). Sending a collectively-owned-by-the-board document out is a recipe for it to become stale and have no clear path to successful updates. I am unclear who would own this confidentiality agreement, were it to come into effect.
   • I would like it if all proposed SCA policies had a clear ownership (in this case I’m OK with a specific point person/ombudsman within the board championing it, who hands it off when they leave instead of dropping it). I have seen some significant mistrust of the Board’s handling of issues, and I feel that it would be better for the Board to have clear channels of discussion with individual people who are all trying to improve our Society, rather than an anonymous dictation from a faceless collective.
   • For policy changes which have a legal impact, I would like to know the reason why we feel that they will be protective of both the SCA and good-faith engaged individuals involved. I believe this could be accomplished by a short abstract written and signed by someone who explains their legal credentials and the relevance of their background to reviewing the change. They could provide answers to questions like: why is 10 years the correct amount of time to keep this agreement active?
   • For policy changes which have a social impact, I feel it is appropriate to explain why this social impact is desirable. Thank you for doing this in your October 23 update.
3. Implementation of this proposal
   • I feel that this agreement as written is standard and appropriate for the following subset of officers listed in the agreement: Members of the Board of Directors, Corporate Officers, Employees, Corporate and Kingdom Investigators, Kingdom Seneschals, Kingdom Exchequers.(i.e. all of them but the Crown). I believe it may be appropriate to extend this in the future to other Kingdom+ officers who have access to privileged information, such as Webministers.
   • Section 1 specifies “name” where presumably “legal name” (or perhaps some other form of mundanely used name?) is meant rather than persona name
   • Sections 4 and 9 of this agreement use “OR” bullet points (any of the following may be true) and the other sections use “AND” (all of the following must be true). Clarifying this within those sections of the document would be better.
   • Section 6: “Through channels that maintain appropriate recordkeeping and security” should likely be “communicate about confidential matters only through channels….”
   • As stated above, I do not feel it is appropriate for Crowns to be in the loop on sanction discussions; they should have no need to sign such a form as they do not hold a privileged officer position.
   • “Proposed addition to Corporate Policy, item XXI” says that this is to be executed 10 days after winning a crown tournament. I do not think that is the right place to update Corpora for something that must be agreed to by the victors of a crown tournament. Were it to be added, it would need to also live in section IV “Royalty”.C “Duties” in a new section 10, immediately after section 9 about having a valid membership for the duration of the reign. But again, I don’t think it should be a power that the crown has, so I don’t think that section should be added.

Camping season is in full swing, and as the heat index and the political climate continue to rise, I’ve been thinking about what I want my hard earned vacations/SCA time to look like.
I decided to come up with a set of house rules for my personal space at events. Be that my day shade, or my encampment tent space. I encourage everyone to make their own set of rules, and stick to them. Then maybe, just maybe, we can all get out the other side of this mess one step closer to being the us we want to be. My (SCA) House Rules for this heated political climate (Edited for reasons)

1. Please leave modern political discourse at the gate. We can discuss important political issues in the mundane world, I prefer not to in my SCA world.
2. All are welcome in my house, assuming they can be tolerant. There is no room for hate here. I do not care what color your skin is or who is in your bed at night (or during the day for that matter). It has no bearing on whether you are a good person with decent values. My family has a rainbow of skin colors; and my friends are from all walks of life. If you can be nice, and make others feel welcome, then you are welcome.
3. My house is smoke (both kinds) and dog friendly. Cats are a case-by-case basis. They are welcome if they don’t get up on my furniture. I am very VERY allergic to them.
4. I am an introvert at the core and easily overwhelmed by crowds and lots of noise. If you are looking for a big party, you won’t find it here. If you are looking for a quiet place to hang out with cool people and chill, that’s the vibe.
5. Alcohol and swearing are allowed, but if there are little kids around, please at least try to act like an adult.
6. We are disability friendly, we don’t fat (or skinny) shame. And we will share our snacks and water.
7. I don’t tolerate backstabbing or rudeness. If you see someone in my house that you don’t care for. You have two choices. Come in and be civil or move along and come back later. Do not ask me to choose sides, you probably won’t like my choice. If you can follow my rules, come on in, and sit a spell. If you can’t, don’t be surprised if I ask you to move along. I’m not putting up with any mean, hateful or cliquish behavior. Life is too short to hang out with jerks while you’re on vacation.

My personal SCA camping interaction rules

1. My existence in the modern world and the existence of people like me in history is extremely politicized. I am uninterested in building a space that is welcoming to people who don’t support my right as a transgender person to self-determination and safety, even if they are willing to not talk about it at events. I am also extremely open to talking with people who are curious about what matters to me and don’t have another trans person whom they want to ask, or those who want to be respectful but don’t yet have the right words. This means that my camp will likely talk about modern politics and life – I am personally not interested in “enchanted ground” style encampments which limit non-medieval topics and behaviors, even if I didn’t need glasses to see.
2. While I enjoy talking about hot topics (modern politics, technology and labor, etc) at almost any time, there are many people for whom it is a stressful and unwanted topic, including several people I enjoy sharing space with in my SCA camp. If a potentially heated topic comes up, my request is that we stop and take a pulse of the group before continuing. This check should ideally put the burden on us to move away from people in camp who are hanging out and haven’t explicitly consented, rather than putting the burden on someone near us to be the first one to speak up and say they don’t want to hear it. Please help me be a good friend by reminding me to do this if I am excited about the topic and forget.
3. Please don’t smoke anything near me, you are welcome to drink alcohol or use other non-airborne substances that you have prior experience with near me, if you can continue to respect boundaries after using them. Know that I will not join you in it (not a careful sobriety thing for me, just not a habit I’m interested in picking up).
4. I don’t have kids or pets and don’t know what to do with either of them, but they’re welcome to hang out with us if you can provide all needed supervision of them. I will not want to pet your dog but I wish it well on its journey. I’m slightly better with cats but realistically not habituated to them either.
5. I prefer quiet connection around the campfire to loud revelry. I go to bed early and generally wake up early at events. If you would like to be louder especially late at night, I would appreciate you not being directly adjacent to my tent.
6. On disability - here are my physical limitations: I am happy to support others when I can, I am usually but not always physically able to help put up tents and carry light to medium weight items. I am never able to sit on the ground without a chair and I may not be able to walk as far as I want to at a larger event, especially after overextending myself the first day. I will gladly eat meat, fish, peanuts, tree nuts, and sesame, sometimes all at once, but Aife will not.
7. On triggers - some things which I would like to explicitly opt into hearing about are: hospitals (especially psychiatric), weight gain/loss with numbers, medical/legal/institutionally-related trauma that you have experienced. This doesn’t mean we can never talk about it, this just means ask if I’m ready for the conversation first.

9. On interpersonal interactions - I’m here to make friends and here to be a friend. I am willing to be a sympathetic ear and usually somewhat interested in hearing the gossip, but I may not want to take public sides in disputes that don’t impact safety. I think my best self is probably less cynical and negative than the self I am today. If I cause a problem for you, I would like to know so that I can try to help resolve it.

I don’t mean this to throw shade at HEMA - we are fundamentally very similar activities. I also saw the local SCA fencing group discussing at length how HEMA isn’t one thing with a commonly used standard the way our Society is, and the consensus in that conversation was that we think that does keep SCA fighters safer to some extent on calibration and armoring standards.

I don’t think that I ever had a serious conversation about the risks of rapier fighting before I decided to do it, but I’m much more risk averse than I was a few years ago anyway, so it’s good to periodically revisit what I am comfortable with.

Anyway if you’re just here for the gossip here’s the HEMA incidents I’m referring to. I am aware that as a non-HEMA-practicioner I only hear the egregious stuff and it’s probably usually not like this:

Without equipment failure

The major risks I am trying to avoid are concussion from oblique hits to the head (usually melee and/or spear), broken fingers from hits to the hand (usually in Cut and Thrust), and heatstroke/heat exhaustion from overheating at summer outdoor events.

Knee injuries from lunges, and sometimes shoulder/rotator cuff injuries are also relatively common, from anecdotal discussion. (no I don’t have hard data on this :( I should ask the SCA Society Earl Marshal if she has data!).

Bruises are a regular part of the sport but I don’t mind them as they don’t endanger my livelihood or well-being long term.

I still believe that SCA Rapier is maybe an order of magnitude less risky than SCA Armored Combat, in large part because I have only done rapier in “lightest touch” calibrated kingdoms. If I didn’t overall trust my opponent to not hit me too hard, I might say something different.

Nothing is without risk; I have a desk job, and I believe that not exercising would be worse for me overall than going to weekly practice.

With equipment failure

A broken blade with a sharp point can easily penetrate armor and kill. (I am shocked at how cavalier I was in high school - my fencing team usually had 2-3 blades break per season, at least partially because it was from November to February in New York and we were constantly going in and out of buildings and into the snowy outside with our stuff, also because our training was… somewhat adhoc and I hit way harder then than I do today in the SCA. It is also worth noting that the SCA has almost entirely deprecated use of modern epees, foils, and flexi-daggers at this point, specifically due to the higher risk of breakage with the thinner blades compared to the thicker historical recreation schlager cross-section blades.)

It is worth noting that SCA events generally occur down dirt roads with no cell service. I assume that anything that is treatable only if handled promptly by an ambulance will potentially kill at an SCA event.

What am I doing to keep myself healthy and safe?

1. I’m continuing to follow SCA standards and best practices for equipment and inspection.

I am also continuing to wear “reduced armor” of a single layer of thin fabric on my torso in non-C&T non-melee situations, with people I already know who aren’t brand new. It is less safe in the broken blade failure case but overall it keeps me cooler in the sun than my chainmail can, and makes me less tired to wear which is a benefit to my safety.

2. I’m buying a new mask and likely padding it with additional anti-concussion foam.

This is a me thing – the mask I fence in was purchased new when I was 15. I am currently 31. I used it for two four-month varsity sport seasons for modern epee (as well as for moonlighting at Pennsic two summers), it sat in a closet for seven years, and I have been using it continuously for SCA fencing for the last eight years. The inner padding isn’t as bad as it could be but it noticeably wiggles when we test it in inspections to see if it hits my face after I put it on my head. The velcro/elastic straps have almost fully worn out and I sewed new elastic to them but it doesn’t help a lot.

Re-waterproofing my boots

Boots from Pennsic 2022. Not reeeeally persona appropriate for me but they’re SCA passable, and at that time in my life I needed closed toed leather shoes to avoid the cactus so the period Roman sandals weren’t it, and Bohemond was willing to cut down the tops for me same-day so I could put them on around my wide calves. The soles are pretty worn down so I wear these only when fighting outdoors these days, there’s not enough traction on them for a gym floor. Retaping my dagger tip

I took pictures in hope that I could write a “How I tape a rapier tip” blog post, but then looking at the photos now I realized the tape I’m using doesn’t photograph well for this. Mistakes were made and lessons were learned!

My dagger is one of the shorter (14”?) open ring guard models from Darkwood Armory, from Pennsic 2018. It’s pretty but I am constantly having to sand out burrs after using it to parry, which I do with a block of sandpaper - I think 250 grit, it’s pretty beat up by now so I’m due to replace the sand block. I only use the sandpaper for burrs on the edge of the blade, not sanding out small rust spots. For small rust spots I use a gray “rust eraser” which puts off more shavings but takes less metal off the blade. After rust removal I coat the metal (blade, guard too if I’m being patient) in a thin layer of wax, also from Darkwood https://rapiers.darkwoodarmory.com/product/max-wax/. How I tape a rapier tip

Materials:

1. Rapier or dagger with rounded or spatulated tip (spatulated means there’s a wider blob on the end, it is better if you’re ordering new. I heard at practice recently that putting a washer in the tip is optional for spatulated tips.)
2. The tiniest washer you can find, like a #6 or so, or a hex nut of about that size
3. Rubber safety tip/blunt (I have some now-discontinued ones from Castille - the new generation has the washer built in, nice upgrade since getting the washer in the tip is the worst part. Recently one ordered from Amazon failed at our practice within two months of being put on so I’d go with a tip not from Amazon. 4. Hockey tape in a different color than the safety tip (which is usually black but some brands can be red) or blade (which is silver). I used to use electrical tape since it’s easier to find and less sticky on the outside, but it also gets destroyed faster in heat and doesn’t stick as well in humidity. Steps:

1. Put the washer inside the tip of the tip. It must be parallel to the flat end of the blunt. I use a chopstick. It is extremely annoying. Sometimes soaking the tip in hot water can loosen it enough to get an otherwise too-big washer in (this has never worked for me but I was told it once). I have a hex nut in place of washer in one of my tips because you can shove it in with a bolt attached and then unscrew the bolt with less likelihood of the nut twisting.
2. Put the tip on the end of the blade. If it wiggles when otherwise in place, take it off, wrap the blade tip with a single layer of tape, then put the tip on. Ensure the tip is on as deeply as it can be, and that the washer has not slipped. The blade and the washer should be perpendicular to each other.
3. Wrap tape around the tip, working from the tip of the tip, down over the opening where the tip meets the blade, down over the blade. Each new wrap of tape should cover about half of the previous wrap. Do not cover the top of the tip, there should be a rubber circle with tape around the edge. This is in the rules so we can more easily check for cracks or blow-through from the blade.
4. When you reach 2-4” of sword wrapped beneath the bottom of the tip, change the angle of the wrap overlap to start wrapping back up towards the tip again. When you reach the starting point, cut the tape. You are done! Tug the tip gently to ensure it does not wiggle.

Retaping my katana tip

I parry a LOT with the last inch or two of the katana and the old tape provides environmental storytelling of that fact.

The tsuba of my katana is also quite beat up from parries. I had to sand this down with a file and it’s still not that smooth.

Product placement yet again - I have a “light flex” katana from Purpleheart Armory. https://www.woodenswords.com/product_p/vb.katana.flex.htm. It was under US$300 when I bought it in late 2023 – prices have gone up, I guess. It meets crossover flex standards if you eyeball it but the local Ealdormere rapier marshal tested it with a weight and it is only allowed for cut and thrust here, probably because it’s so short – it’s flexier than some rapiers, but those rapiers are longer, and we’re looking for more than 0.5” deformation from hilt to tip with the weight test. The katana is 29” long, it just doesn’t have as much distance to deform along. Why does it matter that this crown happened?

Know that even though I’m not pulling punches I say this with love: The SCA has spent the vast majority of its 60 years as an overgrown and ahistorical party hosted by science fiction authors who fetishized western Europe, bolted to a 501c3 so we can get liability insurance and better event sites. It is only in the relatively recent past that it has started to successfully fulfill its mission and become an education-focused group interested in the material reality of pre-17th-century life. One example of this: we only removed Western Europe as a primary area of focus in our mission statement in 2020: https://www.sca.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/2020-07-19-Proposed-Change-to-Corpora-Introduction.pdf. There is no real reason for us to have ever had, or to today stick with (pun intended), the tradition of rattan armored combat to determine a king. It’s fun to have some sort of hierarchy and to give each other awards I guess? But this shapes us in all kinds of counterproductive ways. Do I think that expanding just ever so slightly into how you can be appointed to the crown will meaningfully change the bad parts? Honestly, probably not, even though as a rapier fighter who isn’t OK with taking the personal physical risks of armored combat I’m thrilled to maybe someday compete by my own hand for the throne. It’s more a stopgap and a a symbolic victory in the war towards building the Known World I want to see. If we can do this with just cracking the door of change a tiny bit, imagine what we could do if we threw it wide open!

What do I want to see next?

Two main things would happen in my dream world:

1. We should take ourselves seriously as a LARP and completely separate in-game considerations (who is crown) from out-of-game considerations (how we handle harassment complaints and kingdom-level governance documents).

2. In-game, we should have a crown who ascends the throne both for their peer-like qualities, and via means which everyone has a reasonable chance to attain.

Out-of-game considerations should be entirely out-of-game

It is not OK that the primary determinant for whether a harassment complaint successfully leads to denial of attendance at a regional level is the approval and public announcement of it by someone whose only qualification is that they’re good at niche martial arts. I can list several examples of this going extremely poorly in my local community. There are approximately zero guardrails at scale in the SCA to ensure a kingdom will end up with someone who even tries to have the best interests of their regional community at heart, much less succeeds with their actions at improving their group. When it happens, it’s because we got lucky.

In-game crowns should be our best, and should be attainable by all of us

The most common rebuttal to alternative crown formats that I’ve heard is, effectively, “we could elect crowns if we wanted, or just pick a member at random to be crown, but that would miss the magic and joy of it”. I disagree that our current method is meaningfully better than picking someone at random from those who sign up to compete. Personally, if it were up to me, I would require all crown entrants to enter by submitting a two to five page proposal for the theme of their reign, covering items such as: what parts of history they’re interested in addressing and recreating with their consort, what they want people to learn from it, what they will do to engage their populace, who will support them, and so on. After that, of everyone who is a paid member and writes at least two pages at 12pt font, they can be elected, we can pick one from a hat, we can do whatever feels suitably joyful and magical to people who care more about that. (I personally think we should pick a top 8 or 16 by populace vote and then do subsequent rounds as random draws.) We can hold the champions tournaments day-of after we pick from the hat if we want to watch some niche martial arts.

I gathered this data by hand from the East Kingdom wiki and facebook. It took me about 2 hours to gather the pronouns and another about half hour to find the lists of combatants (searching facebook, EK Seneschal Blog, EK seneschal blog archive, EK announcement archive).
